About Thai

Welcome to Thailand (Introduction) | A History Worth Discovering | The Spiritual Heart of Thailand | Festival | Religion | Thai Food

To understand Thailand, you must understand its spirit — and that spirit is deeply Buddhist. With over 40,000 temples (Wat) dotting the landscape from the golden spires of Bangkok to the misty mountains of Chiang Mai, Buddhism isn't just a religion in Thailand. It is a way of life.

Approximately 95% of Thai people practice Theravāda Buddhism, which shapes everything from daily morning merit-making rituals and the saffron-robed monks collecting alms at dawn, to the grand royal ceremonies that have been performed for centuries. Visiting a Thai temple is an experience that stays with you forever.

Thailand is also beautifully diverse in its faiths:

Islam thrives in the southern provinces, contributing rich Malay-Muslim traditions to Thailand's cultural tapestry. Christianity, Hinduism, and Sikhism bring vibrant minority communities, especially in Bangkok. Animism and Brahminism weave through everyday Thai life — you'll spot the colourful Spirit Houses (San Phra Phum) in front of almost every home and business, offerings of flowers and incense placed with quiet devotion

This spiritual richness makes Thailand one of the world's most profoundly meaningful destinations for cultural exploration.
